The dental pulp is found inside every tooth and comprises nerves, blood, and connective tissue. Left untreated, an infection can become an abscess, a pocket of pus at the tooth’s root.

Saving a tooth with irreversible inflammation requires root canal treatment. Removing the infected nerves inside the canals of a tooth will also help to relieve pain.

For most patients presenting in pain, a root canal treatment can be commenced at the initial appointment once an x-ray and assessment have been provided. Under local anaesthetic, the infected non-vital pulp tissue is removed from the canals, and the canals are cleaned and disinfected, and medications are inserted. A temporary dressing and filling are provided to protect the canals until the next visit.

At the subsequent visit, further irrigation continues, the canals are dried and filled, and the exterior tooth structure is rebuilt.
