Types of Dentures
- Full Dentures: A full upper or lower denture replaces a full arch of teeth and is positioned over the gums and held in the mouth by passive retention. These dentures are removable and will require daily cleaning to ensure good oral health.
- Partial Dentures: A partial denture can be made to replace the loss of one or more teeth in an arch. Natural existing teeth are used to provide support with the assistance of small metal clips connected to the denture base, which may be made from either chrome or acrylic. These dentures are simple to wear, easy to keep clean, and restore the ability to speak, eat, and smile confidently.
- Immediate Dentures: In some cases, a patient may require a number of extractions prior to receiving a new denture. Also referred to as “same day dentures”, immediate dentures are created for insertion on the same day teeth are removed. Immediate dentures may require adjustments once healing of the gums has occurred to achieve a more comfortable fit. Over time, immediate dentures will need to be relined due to the rapidly changing shape of the gums and jawbone to ensure the denture continues to fit adequately against the gums.
