When Do We Recommend Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Our dentists may recommend removing your wisdom teeth in these circumstances:

• Impaction — Wisdom teeth stuck beneath the gumline can cause an infection and should be removed.
• Crowding — If there’s not enough room in your mouth for wisdom teeth, they may begin crowding neighbouring teeth and cause shifting.
• Cleanliness — Wisdom teeth are at the back of your mouth, which makes them harder to brush and floss.

A local anaesthetic ensures you don’t feel anything during your procedure, even in very complex cases. It is not unusual to feel pressure during a tooth extraction. Fragile teeth may need to be sectioned for removal, and if needed, a small suture or two may be placed to assist with healing.

Minor swelling and bruising are normal after wisdom teeth removal and following most extractions. We may prescribe antibiotics, and pain relief may be required for several days. We will provide aftercare instructions that should be carefully followed to avoid complications.
